The WCUME is a world famous conference about all things ultrasound and ultrasound in medical education! I know many of you have had the privilege of attending if not presenting at previous WCUME’s, so you may already be familiar with it.
We are writing to ask for volunteers for this year’s conference!! Being involved as a volunteer is an amazing way to attend the conference (for FREE/waived registration fee), spend time with UCI’s Emergency Department, network with others in the field, and to bolster your CV experiences! We need volunteers for registration, POCUS bootcamp, ultrasound modeling, hands-on workshops, social activities, and set up crew! UCI has had the incredible opportunity to teach ultrasound to the bright high school students over at the California School of the Deaf in Riverside. Thank you to Dr. Fischetti for spearheading the effort! Over the past 3 months, we taught POCUS basics on our portable Butterfly Ultrasounds, from viewing new bone breaks to PSL views of the heart to full bladders! On our final session today, we also video chatted in a Deaf Physician specializing in Radiology to speak to the students about her journey. Most importantly, we wanted to relay to young students that no matter their background, a career in medicine is always within reach, and that there are many different ways to enter it, whether it be as a future Ultrasound Tech, a Mortician, or Doctor.

This year, we had strong attendance from UCISOM at the annual WCUME! Ten 2nd year medical students were in attendance, presenting on ultrasound research they had done while on their International Ultrasound trips this past summer, totaling 6 abstracts – 3 from Team Indonesia, 2 from Team Panama, and 1 from Team Tanzania. Emergency Medicine Fellows also presented 2 abstracts at the conference, resulting in a submission of 8 abstracts at the conference from UCI! To learn more about the International Ultrasound Research projects, check out our International Outreach Tab above.
Attention all current UCISOM MS1s who are interested in International Ultrasound Education and Research Trips!
This year, the Ultrasound Teams (Team Indonesia, Kenya, Panama, Switzerland, and Tanzania) will be using a common application to make the process of joining a team easier for you all! The app will be due 11/1/17. If you are interested in obtaining access to the application, send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We want to give everyone the time to talk with their families, explore other summer plans, and make sure spending a month+ abroad is something they really want to do.
All the groups will be holding additional information sessions individually in the coming month, so please look out for emails from each team that you are interested in joining. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Ultrasound Interest Group via email!
